Hire the Right Person, The First Time
Isn't that the goal?
Hiring the wrong person takes hours of someone's time to correct, probably yours, and causes undue hours of stress. The following are some tips to help you hire the right person the first time. The hiring process is similar to a marriage. You spend some time dating and getting to know the person, and then when you say "I do", you have the opportunity to find out who that person really is.
- Spend the time necessary to prescreen your candidates. You can check work related references before you decide to interview the candidate, determine if the candidate's salary expectations are out of your range, or if their background is a match for your needs.
- Communicate with the candidate. You might share the job description, and your expectations of the position. The candidate should be looking you over as much as you are looking them over. You are trying to find the best fit for your company, not just a "warm body".
- Interview with more than one person on the panel. Make your employee selection process successful, as two heads are better than one.
- Don't rely on the interview process alone to evaluate your applicant. Behavior based questions are more difficult for the applicant to answer. Remember, past behavior is the best predicator of future behavior. We have sample questions for you so you don't have to think of them on your own.
- Don't be afraid to use silence in the interview process. Too many interviewers want to dominate the process and talk too much. Let the applicant respond to the questions and don't fill in the blanks for them or read something in their answer.
- Only evaluate skills and experience. Many interviewers hire a person like themselves which may not be the best hiring decision. Hire people who are smarter, brighter, and who add diversity to your team, as they will make you look good, and your business successful.
- Determine the critical job skills for the position. Pick the three or four critical skills that will make the position success full in your business. Hire for those skills and take as much time as necessary to find the right person to perform those skills. By following our guidelines, you too can be successful, which will help make your company profitable. (Isn't that what you are in business for?)
- Ensure you have a large enough pool of candidates. Don't settle for someone who doesn't possess the basic skills you are looking for. Your company's success is predicated on hiring the right person, the first time.
